New Adult Sunday School Classes – Winter 2014

adult sunday school classesYour call to action!  First, read the overviews of the Adult Classes for Winter Quarter.  Second, determine which one speaks to you.  Third, join one of these three great new classes beginning this Sunday, January 26 at 9:40am!

BECOMING WHO WE ARE IN CHRIST, facilitated by Greg Hjort, meeting in the Chapel
The struggles with your Christian life are in no way modern or unique–they are timeless struggles of the human condition. In this class we will be studying and discussing a classic work on Reformed spirituality called The Gospel Mystery of Sanctification by Walter Marshall (1620-1680). What does it look like to bear fruit in the Christian life? Where do we find the motivation and power to actually grow in holiness (becoming truly human)? How do we avoid the deadly discipleship pitfalls of cheap grace, legalism and moralism in our Christian walk? Far from being a dry old book of English Puritan theology, this book has been balm for the soul of many a veteran Christian despairing over the ongoing presence of habitual sin in their lives. Marshall implores us to learn that it is through our Union with Christ and faith in His completed and finished work on our behalf in the gospel that the Holy Spirit begins to grow fruit in our lives. Come join us and discover the joy and freedom of becoming who you are in Christ.

PASSING ON YOUR SPIRITUAL LEGACY, facilitated by Jay and Nancy Adams, meeting in Lewis Hall
We write wills to pass on our possessions and property to family members and friends, but what about the things that really matter: our values, beliefs, wisdom and stories? Best-selling author, Daniel Taylor, in his book Creating a Spiritual Legacy, shows how anyone can preserve and pass on their vision of life. No matter what your age or stage of life, creating a spiritual legacy both enriches your own life and blesses the lives of those you love. One reviewer on Amazon wrote, “I didn’t get one-third of the book read before I knew this is what I wanted to do for my 18 year old granddaughter’s birthday. My letter turned into 8 pages. My granddaughter said it was the best present of anything she ever received and that she will keep it forever!” The Adams will share stories of those who have left spiritual legacies for their families and others. It will be more workshop than lecture. Another book to be explored will be Pilgrimage into the Last Third of Life: 7 Gateways to Spiritual Growth by Jane Marie Thibault and Richard Morgan.

LOVING OUR CITY, facilitated by Luke Crook, meeting in Howell Auditorium
God loves cities. How does that statement strike you? Do Christians carry any responsibility toward cities? What does a calling to love a city look like? And how could West Siders think about our city? These are the questions we’ll be discussing in this class. We will look at three different approaches to addressing these questions: (1) what are the biblical and theological truths related to cities; (2) what are some of the great stories of how Christians have loved and are loving cities; and (3) what practical approach might West Side have to these issues. Getting deep into these matters is of strategic and heartfelt importance as we move together as a church into who God is forming us to be.
